Artificial intelligence can speed up information searches, expand reach, and personalize content. But the creative vision, responsibility, and ability to ask questions and find answers remain the journalist’s domain. This was the conclusion of experts speaking at the session, Journalism School - AI in the Newsroom: Implementation, Opportunities and Risks.

Vedomosti’s VEDY Media Deputy Editor-in-Chief Alexey Gavrilko believes that Gen Z, both those working in newsrooms and those consuming media content, tend to trust artificial intelligence more.

“The reason is that both our audience and our authors are more familiar with how it works. They don’t think AI is something to be feared. They understand that AI is a tool to be used,” he said.

He added that using artificial intelligence in a newsroom brings not only risks but also a wide range of opportunities.

“I believe that without this tool, it would simply be impossible for our newsroom, with its limited staff, to produce the content we offer to the market,” Alexey Gavrilko said.

TECHFUSION MAGAZINE CEO and publisher Fame Fakeh Bunyui agreed. She noted that artificial intelligence offers virtually limitless possibilities for adapting content to different lengths and formats.

“Imagine you have an interview. It can be transcribed and turned into a long read, a feature-length story, or a clickbait article, depending on your goals,” she explained, adding that AI would not be able to replace journalists.

Catalina Obono Mba Nchama, a journalist at Revista Real and editor-in-chief of Egshine, said that efforts are underway in Equatorial Guinea to educate the public about the responsible use of artificial intelligence. A legal framework to regulate the digital environment is also being developed.

“Being a journalist in digital media and creating content is not easy. We must always be mindful of our responsibilities and limitations,” she said.
